Services in Iowa is the Social Mission of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America.
Global Greens was founded 20 years ago as part of the Refugee and Resettlement Program at LSI. Clients wanted access to land so they could grow key ingredients in their cuisine, like they did back in their origin countries. So we started a community garden.
Today, Global Greens (with site partners) manages 20 community gardens supporting nearly 250 refugee families in the Des Moines area.
Many community gardeners were former famers, and saw an opportunity to do more. So we've developed a Beginning Farmer Development program--that includes an 8-acre Incubator Farm at Valley Community Center, where farmers have up to 1/4 acre; and a 12-acre Graduate Farm in Granger, IA, where each farmer has 3-acres and is advanced enough to be working full-time.
